Like GW Contrast but different...

I'm pretty sure Army Painter Speed Paint received a record number of pre-release reviews from various on-line painters. I must have seen at least 10. They were usually very favourable with only one reviewer pointing out a negative characteristic (more on that below). People liked the paint as an alternative to GW Contrast, noting more consistency between colours and a significantly lower price. The only problem mentioned was that Speed Paint will reactivate when another medium is applied on top of it.
Reasoning that I could airbrush a clear coat over Speed Paint to prevent this I ordered some samples. Hardened Leather was the colour I tried out on a miniature with scale armour that had been zenithal primed white over black. Speed Paint, does indeed, feel different than Contrast paint. It flows more freely but with equally good coverage. I really liked the result I got. The lighter (whiter) part of the scales almost glowed compared to the darker. I did airbrush a protective clear coat on even though I didn't add anything further to the Speed Painted area. I'm not sure what would have happened with a brush-on clear coat.
I foresee a need for both Speed Paint and Contrast in the future, taking advantage of either as the case requires. I'll definitely get more Speed Paint and the 4/5 rating is only because of the reactivation issue. Thanks to Sunward for making these paints available!
