Description

In 1977, Lotus introduced a ground effect car, the Type 78 which had a slim monocoque chassis and wide side pontoons with undersurfaces like inverted aircraft wings. Round 6 Belgium GP in the 1978 season saw the introduction of the further evolved Type 79. The fuel tanks were placed behind the cockpit and the rear suspension featured effective inboard dampers. Mario Andretti was paired with Ronnie Peterson that year, and the former drove the car to an impressive pole-to-finish debut win. More success followed, with Andretti taking 5 wins to claim the drivers’ championship and Peterson adding another win to help the team claim the constructors’ title. The Type 79 greatly influenced later F1 machines and its overwhelming speed as well as graceful design and livery earned it the nickname “Black Beauty.”

Tricky Build

Over all a good kit to build but ! , I would have preferred if they had molded some of the smaller parts into the larger parts instead of molding them separately . Some of the parts are very small and require close attention and dexterity than normally expected and can be quite tricky for us older guys .

The smallest parts can be difficult when building the engine and attaching intricate parts as the engine gets more complete . I appreciate the detail in the parts and was surprised that I had little problem with the suspension and exhaust than I did completing the engine .

Over all I am about 2/3's of the way through the build and I am enjoying the challenge of it and the reward of seeing it slowly becoming nearer to completion .

Was expecting more

Discovered upon receipt that the photo etched parts are not included in this kit and are sold separately. Feels like I’ve been cheated, sold an incomplete kit. You guys should take note. 14 of the 27 steps to completion the model requires photo-etched parts! Now I’m searching for the parts. Would have preferred being informed prior to purchasing. Not a happy camper!
