Abteilung 502 Burnt Umber Oil Paint ABT006

I went the cheap route the first time and got a set of oil paints from that big box M store. Even though I thinned using a quality mineral spirit, they were just grainy and did not mix well.

Abteilung 502 is like night and day in terms of quality and the price is reasonable.

If you are making your first forays into oil washes, start with a black and a rust colored paint like this one and go from there. It goes on where you apply it and can be mopped up to recover your highlights with mineral spirt (Mona Lisa) on a cotton swab. It flows nicely into the fine lines even better when applied over a gloss coat.

These paints are just fabulous. Easy to use, great coverage and dry within around 24-48 hours which is really fast for oils. Have used these for washes and glazes (mixed with 50/50 liquin and linseed oil) and thinned using Abteilungs own thinner for layering, blending, detail work and freehand. These paints do not disappoint!!
